About Us

Picture
Parents for Social Justice is an organization dedicated to helping parents, particularly those with young children, participate in progressive activism. We believe that the voice of parents is often lacking in social justice movements because the challenges of raising children often prevent them from being present. We want to give resources to parents to ensure their voices are heard.

We work with ally organizations to provide information on actions as well as creating our own actions that are child friendly. We help parents participate with our ally organizations while at the same time respecting their parenting needs. We respect the time demands on parents of young children and meet them where they are, while at the same time giving them the resources to have fuller participation.

We are primarily based in Louisville, Kentucky but we have parent members all over the United States. We maintain an online presence through our website, Facebook page, twitter feed and Facebook discussion group. We daily moderate the discussion group which regularly tackles complex issues and provides support for both online and offline actions of our members. We use this group and other social media outlets to promote our in person actions and the actions of other ally organizations as well as to encourage members to discuss social justice issues with their friends, family and most importantly their children.

We are a grassroots organization and are open to all members regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, age, appearance or ability. While our events are typically geared towards parents of young children, they are open to anyone who wants to participate. Our leadership is open and we encourage members to create and lead their own events as well as to use our organization to promote ally events.

Our Vision

We envision a world where parents are a vocal and vital part of social justice movements. We want parents to work towards racial and economic justice, gender and sexual orientation equality, just educational, legal and public health practices, community accessibility, reproductive rights and evidence-based parenting practices that promote social justice. We believe that as guardians of the next generation parents’ voices in social justice movements is essential. We believe that by actively advocating for social justice parents are providing their children with the tools to make a more peaceful and just future.

Our History

We were formed on August 27, 2014 when a few of us huddled in the playroom of Mama's Hip and decided that we must turn our angst into action. With babies nursing, toddlers climbing on us, and preschoolers running wild, we sought to find fertile soil in which to cultivate new parent activists and a friendly and safe environment for families to stay informed and participate in social change.
We have organized several actions including:
  • Ally Training to promote activism with child care provided
  • Silence Isn’t Golden- A Voice for Victims of Gun Violence
  • Kid’s Painting Event after vandalism at a local mosque
  • Petition Drive to Support local WIC offices
  • Black Lives Matter Sign Making Parties
  • Social Justice playgroups
  • Babywearing sale to support Syrian refugees
  • Craftivism actions for various social justice goals
  • 502 Kindness Week (a week where we encouraged people to do random acts of kindness through Louisville)
  • Movie screenings
  • Boycott of the Oxmoor Mall and Mall Saint Matthews over racially motivated policies
  • Get Out the Vote Campaign
We are however most proud not of the things we have organized but of the actions that we have encouraged our individual members to take. Many parents with little to no social justice activism background are now participating regularly in many ally organizations and are working towards making those organizations more friendly and open to other parents.
